What Size Expedition Vehicle Do You Actually Need?

When people picture a Motorcraft expedition vehicle, they often think big.

MANs. Mercedes trucks. 6x6s. Full-size expedition builds.

But that’s only part of what we do.

We build everything from compact 3.5-tonne vehicles and van-based campers through to Iveco Daily builds, MAN and Mercedes expedition trucks, prefab habitation units and completely bespoke vehicles.

And after speaking to people at CarFest recently, we realised this isn’t always obvious.

We only had one Mercedes-Benz Arocs on display, and quite a few visitors assumed that was our standard size of vehicle.

It isn’t.

There really isn’t a standard Motorcraft expedition vehicle.

Start with how you want to travel

The best place to start isn’t always with the badge on the front.

It’s with how you’re actually going to use the vehicle.

Are there one or two of you travelling?

A family?

Are you heading away for weekends, touring Europe for months or planning to live off-grid for long periods?

Do you need space for bikes, motorbikes, outdoor gear, extra water or a proper working area?

All of that helps decide what size and type of vehicle makes sense.

Because bigger isn’t automatically better.

3.5-tonne expedition vehicles

At the smaller end of the range, we build compact expedition vehicles around platforms such as the Ford Ranger, INEOS Grenadier Quartermaster and Toyota Land Cruiser.

For a lot of people, this size makes perfect sense.

They’re easier to drive, easier to manoeuvre and better suited to tighter roads and trails.

You obviously have less room than in a full-size truck, but clever layouts still allow for proper sleeping, cooking, storage and washing facilities.

Small doesn’t have to mean basic.

Vans and Iveco Daily builds

Then there’s the next step up.

Vehicles such as the Iveco Daily & Mitsubishi Fuso offer a useful middle ground between a smaller camper and a large expedition truck.

You get more space and payload, but without immediately stepping into something huge.

Depending on the build, you can still have a proper kitchen, bathroom, lounge, storage and different sleeping layouts.

For couples or smaller families who want more comfort without driving a massive truck, this can be a great option.

Mid-size and larger expedition trucks

Move up again and you get into vehicles such as the MAN TGM, Mercedes Atego, Mercedes Arocs, MAN HX60 and other larger commercial or ex-military platforms.

This is where you start gaining a lot more space for long-term travel.

Larger water tanks.

More battery capacity.

More storage.

Larger kitchens and bathrooms.

Permanent beds.

Garages for bikes or equipment.

For people travelling for months or years at a time, that extra space and payload can make a huge difference.

And then, of course, there’s the bigger end of the scale.

6x6s. 8x8s. Full expedition homes.

We’ve built those too.

But not everyone needs one.

The layout matters just as much as the truck

The chassis is only half of the decision.

Inside, two vehicles built on the same truck can be completely different.

One customer might want a permanent bed.

Another might prefer a larger lounge with a drop-down bed.

A family might need bunk beds.

Someone travelling with motorbikes might prioritise a rear garage or hydraulic lift.

Another customer might want a bigger bathroom, workspace or more kitchen storage.

That’s why we don’t simply build one standard interior and repeat it.

The layout should suit the people using it.

Prefab, Trekkon or fully bespoke

There are also different ways to build with Motorcraft.

Our prefab habitation bodies are ideal for customers who want a professionally manufactured body but plan to complete more of the build themselves.

Our Trekkon range offers another route into a Motorcraft expedition vehicle.

And then there are fully bespoke builds, designed around a customer’s specific chassis, travel plans and requirements.

Because so much of our manufacturing is done in-house, we’re not tied to one vehicle, one body size or one layout.

That gives us a lot more flexibility when it comes to building the right vehicle for the job.

So what is the standard Motorcraft expedition vehicle?

There isn’t one.

The Mercedes Arocs we took to CarFest is a great example of what we can build, but it’s only one example.

Your ideal vehicle could be a compact 3.5-tonne camper.

It could be an Iveco Daily.

A MAN.

A Mercedes.

A prefab body.

Or something completely bespoke that hasn’t been built before.

The important bit is choosing the vehicle around the journey, rather than choosing the biggest truck you can find.
